5 things: Advice for Changing Careers

1 – Have acceptance.

It’s not easy to change careers, especially if you still love some elements of it. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. The faster you accept that this chapter of your life is over, the faster you can begin writing your next chapter. Accept that it’ll be new, scary, exciting and frustrating, and you may want to cry sometimes, but acceptance is the key to moving forward.

2 – Detach your identity (and your worth) from your job.

If you’re like me, you may glue too much of your identity to your job title/position/status. You may also tie your worth to sales numbers, how much money you make or something else that’s out of your control. After switching careers, I learned that my identity is more than my job title, and my worth is better self-determined.

3 – When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

During any transition in life, negative thoughts and self-doubt tend to creep into our minds. This is a good time to practice a healthy and positive growth mindset. Choose to see the good in this. Choose to take the next step. Choose to be your best self. The rest will come.

4 – Start exploring.

Take this in any way that brings you joy. Explore what your next options could be. Explore different ways to achieve your goals. Explore your past hobbies or a new one. Explore your inner self to discover what you truly want. Explore outside the box. Explore the world.

5 – Be patient.

Remind yourself that this transition will not happen overnight. It may take a while before you feel comfortable in your next stage of life. You might feel like giving up or going back. You may wonder why it’s taking so long to get the results you want. Just be patient. Focus on what you can control and take it one step at the time. You’ve got this!
