9 Simple Ways to Look Better Without Really Trying

I’ve never been that drop-dead gorgeous girl who people spin their heads backward to stare at. However, over my years of being an average-looking girl, I’ve learned little tips and tricks that have helped me look and feel a little more put together, without spending too much time or money.

  • Quick Slick

Whether I’m wearing my hair down or just a simple ponytail, I always struggle with flyaway baby hairs. You’ll be surprised how much more put together you can look when those little hairs are out of the way. I’ve tried everything from hair spray to hair gel and even my husband’s manly smelling hair products. The only thing that’s worked for me is Quick Slick (available on Amazon!). It’s a purse-friendly, non-greasy, non-irritating, barely visible magical gift from the heavens that helps hold down those pesky hairs, and it actually stays!

  • Pair loose with tight.

This fashion rule is about balancing your outfit. Think a tight shirt with loose jeans. Think a baggy blouse with a pair of form fitting dress pants. This helps give your fit some dimension, which is more interesting to the eyes.

  • Fill in your eyebrows.

Did you know your eyebrows are one of the most important things on your face? They frame your face and accentuate the eyes. So, take care of them. In addition to shaping them well, try filling them in too. Thicker, fuller brows make your face look more complete and lifted, helping you look younger and healthier. Some products to try are eyebrow pencils and/or tinted brow gel. Extra tip: Try brushing out your eyebrows upward!

  • Add a layer to your outfit.

This goes back to my tip about adding dimension to your look. A layer could be anything as simple as jewelry, a belt, a cute jacket or a scarf.

  • Lip Oil

Chapped lips are never cute. Unfortunately, even on the most hydrated lips, some lipsticks can make your mouth look crackly. Try applying lip oil over any lipstick to get rid of that wrinkly appearance.

  • Fewer Colors

Whether you like to wear bold or neutral pieces, when your outfit sticks to one or two colors, you’ll look like you tried without really trying. Let’s say you have a cute jacket that’s super patterned. Pair that with a one-color outfit underneath. Let’s say you want your outfit to pop. Choose one color to be the pop color (whether it’s the shirt, pants, shoes, etc.) and keep the rest of your fit neutral.

  • Stop with the heavy bottom eyeliner.

News flash: Heavy bottom liner makes you look older and tired. Try a light eyeliner color (like brown, gray, or white) and/or apply less of it. You may think you look weird at first because you aren’t used to it, but I promise you, this trick makes your eyes pop and lifts your entire face.

  • Regular Hair Trims

Just get rid of those dead and dry split ends! Need I say more?

  • Avoid chipped nails.

What’s more terrible than chipping your fresh set of nails the second you leave the salon? Wearing your nails that way for the next two to four weeks. Try bringing your own color to the salon so you can touch up at home. Ask your nail tech to apply TWO layers of topcoat instead of one. Choose lighter and more neutral colors so that when it chips, it’s not as noticeable.
