Ashley Burks, a young visionary with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science – Magna cum laude from Howard University, HU, YOU KNOW!!! who turned her passion for beauty into a thriving business. Her journey is a testimony to perseverance, creativity and the drive for independence.
Finding Freedom Through Entrepreneurship
Ashley Burks’ motivation to start her business was a desire for freedom. She knew the traditional workforce demanded too much of her time. While in college, she began brainstorming ways to earn extra income and soon discovered a love for the beauty industry.
“During COVID, I had a decent amount of free time,” Ashley recalls. “I noticed on social media that lash extension services were becoming popular, so I decided to give it a try and ordered my first practice kit.”
What started as curiosity quickly transformed into a career. Ashley’s commitment to her craft led her to quit her job, leaving her with no stable income as a college student. But she remained determined.
“Each day, I would practice on anyone who would let me,” she says. “I posted daily and frequently, offering sales and other incentives to get my name out there. My consistency helped turn my passion into a successful business.”
Overcoming Challenges as a Young Black Entrepreneur
Starting a business comes with its fair share of challenges, and for Ashley, navigating the beauty industry as a young Black entrepreneur required resilience. She faced skepticism from those who doubted her ability to succeed at such a young age. However, she used those doubts as fuel to prove herself.
“Being young and Black in business can sometimes mean people underestimate you,” she explains. “But I didn’t let that stop me. Instead, I focused on my craft, let my work speak for itself, and continuously found ways to stand out.”
Financial constraints were another hurdle. Without a traditional job to fund her business, Ashley had to be strategic about how she invested in her brand.
“I had to be very careful with how I spent money, making sure that every purchase contributed to growing my business,” she says. “It wasn’t easy, but I believed in myself and stayed consistent.”
Staying Ahead of Trends
Ashley credits her ability to stay updated with beauty trends to her age and her deep engagement with social media.
“I’m 24, so I’d say I’m right in the middle of knowing what’s trendy and what’s in style for each age group I serve,” she explains. “My clientele ranges from 16 to 26+, and they keep me informed about what’s popular. I also evaluate which services best suit my clients, ensuring I always offer something fresh and relevant.”
In an industry that constantly evolves, Ashley understands the importance of adaptability. She frequently invests in new training and certifications to refine her skills and introduce new techniques.
“You have to keep learning and improving,” she says. “Clients appreciate when you stay ahead of the game and bring new styles and techniques to the table.”
Creating a Unique Client Experience
One of the key elements that sets Ashley apart in the beauty industry is the intimate and private nature of her appointments. Unlike many beauty salons where clients are serviced in a shared space, Ashley prioritizes a one-on-one experience.
“I enjoy providing a 1:1 service. It allows me to focus and create a personalized experience for each client,” she says. “I also offer complimentary snacks, drinks, and electronic services to make appointments more comfortable and enjoyable.”
This approach not only enhances customer satisfaction but also builds trust and loyalty among her clientele. Many of her clients appreciate the private and relaxing atmosphere she provides.
“For a lot of my clients, getting their lashes done is a self-care moment,” Ashley explains. “I want them to feel pampered and special when they come to me.”
Debunking Myths About Lash Extensions
Ashley is also dedicated to educating her clients about proper lash care and debunking misconceptions surrounding lash extensions.
“One of the biggest myths is that lash extensions are bad for your natural lashes. That’s simply not true when they are applied correctly,” she asserts. “I educate each client after every service, providing aftercare instructions, do’s and don’ts, and expectations for the first few days. I also follow up with new clients to ensure they are comfortable and satisfied.”
Ashley emphasizes that lash extensions are low-maintenance, requiring only regular cleaning to keep them in optimal condition.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For those looking to enter the beauty industry, or any business, Ashley has one crucial piece of advice:
“Be different. It’s easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing and to imitate trends, but authenticity is what attracts people. Make your business ‘you’ not what you think people will like or pay for. When you build a business around your passion, success follows naturally.”
She also encourages new entrepreneurs to embrace failure as part of the journey.
“You’re going to make mistakes, and that’s okay,” she says. “What matters is how you bounce back and learn from them. Keep pushing forward and never stop believing in yourself.”
The Impact of Black-Owned Businesses
Ashley’s success is part of a larger movement of Black entrepreneurs who are reshaping industries and creating opportunities for others. Black-owned businesses contribute significantly to local economies, provide jobs, and inspire future generations.
“It’s empowering to see so many Black entrepreneurs thriving and making a name for themselves,” Ashley says. “We’re showing the world that we belong in these spaces, that we can lead, and that we can build successful, lasting businesses.”
Her story is a powerful reminder of the impact young Black entrepreneurs have on industries and communities. Her journey underscores the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and staying true to one’s vision.
What’s Next
Ashley plans to open a full lash extension academy for individuals in late 2025. This will give the next generation of aspiring lash techs access to resources and opportunities including internships and employment opportunities.
