Tell us about a time when a woman challenged your thinking, leadership, or perspective. What did you learn, and how has it changed the way you lead today?
Every day I am challenged to think differently because the majority of our leadership team about 80% is made up of women. Their perspectives, wisdom, and leadership have helped shape the way I approach both my work and my life.
I have been especially blessed to build close relationships with the Franciscan sisters , and I was also raised by an incredibly strong mother. These remarkable women have encouraged me, challenged me, and inspired me to become the person I am today. I am deeply grateful for the positive influence they have had on my life.
Many women carry the responsibilities of careers, caregiving, and community leadership simultaneously, yet those experiences are not always reflected in public decision making. How will you ensure the realities women face are considered when making decisions that affect our community?
I have never seen a difference between men and women when it comes to leadership. Gender has never been a factor in how I evaluate someone’s ability to serve our community. What matters most to me is a person’s character, integrity, qualifications, and willingness to lead.
We are fortunate to have many strong women serving in leadership roles throughout our community. I believe the Mayo Clinic has done an excellent job of recognizing and promoting talented leaders based on their abilities, and I also believe our city has made great strides in providing opportunities for women to lead.
At the end of the day, I believe leadership should always be based on merit, experience, and a commitment to serving others not on whether someone is a man or a woman.
