Tell us about a time when a woman challenged your thinking, leadership, or perspective. What did you learn, and how has it changed the way you lead today?
To this day I remain in awe of the leadership shown by Speaker Emeritus Melissa Hortman in 2023. I believe she is one of the most consequential figures in politics in Minnesota history. She led a narrow majority in the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2023. Despite the challenges of holding together dozens of differing opinions and egos, she helped deliver one of the most consequential legislative sessions in Minnesota History. Programs that were transformational to families were passed one after another. This included legislation to protect women’s health care decisions post “Roe,” feeding kids at school, earned sick & safe time, increased K-12 funding and a capital funding scheme that allocated a number of one time dollars. Across the US there are states where one party has enormous majorities but can’t achieve what Hortman achieved in 1 year. Better than almost anyone I have ever watched, she saw the need, saw the opportunity, and executed to near perfection.
Many women carry the responsibilities of careers, caregiving, and community leadership simultaneously, yet those experiences are not always reflected in public decision making. How will you ensure the realities women face are considered when making decisions that affect our community?
In addition to the responsibilities listed, women still face a persistent wage gap in most fields. This makes the challenges most families face with affordability even more challenging. My top priority is affordable housing which has a cascading effect on all parts of life. Our region does not have enough housing, diverse housing to meet different needs, and housing that enables opportunities for people who don’t have ubiquitous access to automobiles. This stresses many households but disproportionately those that are women led.
