The Connection to Nature Demystified: What is Reiki and How Can I Benefit from It?

The most common question asked about Reiki is “What is Reiki?” While it’s not a new healing modality, it isn’t commonplace and therefore stirs curiosity around what it is and its benefits.

In order to answer “What is Reiki?”, it’s easiest to first look at what Reiki is not.

  1. Reiki is not a religion. It is practiced and utilized by people of any religion (or none).
  2. Reiki is not massage or reflexology.
  3. Reiki is not a manipulation of the body. The experience may be contact free or light, hands-on touching.
  4. Reiki is not an alternative for medical attention. It can, however, assist with the healing of the body, mind and spirit.

Now that we know what Reiki is not, let’s look at what Reiki is. Reiki is a healing modality developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s in Japan. “Rei” means “spiritual wisdom” and “ki” means “energy.” Reiki = spiritual energy. Most simply, Reiki is a transfer of energy from the universe through the practitioner to the recipient. The receiver’s energy determines what is needed from the Reiki energy and works with that energy to elevate to a higher self. Reiki practitioners work similarly to the way an extension cord works—a channel for the power from the source to the appliance.

Another common question about Reiki is “How does Reiki work?” The receiver lays on a massage table, relaxing deeply with closed eyes while accepting the healing benefits of Reiki. Reiki healing energy may pass through the practitioner by either a contact-free exchange or by administering a soft, light touch. Oftentimes, other tools are used in a Reiki session such as crystals, essential oils, singing bowls, energy pendulums, sage and more. The use of tools in a Reiki session enhances the power of the energy and is a way to target specific needs of the receiver.

Many people ask how Reiki feels. The experience can be different for each person. You may experience the following or something different:

  1.  Deep relaxation
  2.  Overwhelming emotions
  3.  Heaviness in your body
  4.  Tingling
  5.  Changing body temperature—usually heat
  6.  Seeing colors or images

The benefits of Reiki are numerous and valuable to people of any age or gender. Reiki can only have positive results and is not invasive. In the same way recipients have their own personal experience, individuals may also report various mental, emotional and physical improvements. Some of these may include:

  1. Balancing energy
  2. Deepening relaxation and stress relief
  3. Restoring energy
  4. Giving clear direction and clarity
  5. Reducing anxious feelings
  6. Easing symptoms of depression
  7. Relieving physical pain
  8. Deepening sleep
  9. Healing emotional trauma
  10. Improving self-confidence

There are no prerequisites for Reiki sessions. Reiki energy addresses countless ailments; a client’s unconscious needs may even be revealed during a session. Reiki is nondiscriminatory and holds only love, light and healing for all.

At Awaken Gratitude, we embrace everyone as a whole being. Spiritual health is a complete circle of body, mind and spirit.
