As a woman running for public office, what legacy do you hope your candidacy leaves for the next generation of women and girls in our community?
There’s a joke: “What’s the difference between aggressive and assertive?” …the punchline, “gender.“
As a former elected official, I’ve experienced firsthand how brutal and judgmental public office can be for women. Told to comb my hair differently and just ‘smile more‘ are common advice for many women.” It’s even worse as an autistic female when facing ableism in addition to the sexist judgments. Running for office often feels like a popularity contest with hidden rules within a rigged political system. Without female role models encouraging young girls, it is even more of an uphill battle.
Win or lose, the mere act of filing to run for office helps pave the way for others who identify as girls and women. Women don’t need to fit into a polished box; simply running for public office shows society the term “assertive” is a positive trait.
I tell my daughter (and sons) that we need to care more about what future generations think of us, than today’s trolls often hiding behind screens. For those who pay attention, my legacy will reflect my integrity, activism, and unwavering resilience in doing what is right. We must never bow-down to bullies, never lose faith in humanity, and uplift women to help amazing leaders to succeed.
What do you hope another woman or young girl sees in you that gives her the courage to believe, “If she can do it, so can I”?
In college I overcame my shyness with female role models who encouraged me to get involved. I participated in exchange programs, served on student senate, and was active in political groups on campus. A good female friend, holding office in the opposite political party, encouraged me to never give up, saying, “all you need are good ideas and a thick skin.”
I hope with my integrity in standing up for what is right and my unwavering resilience have inspired courage in other women. My children, former students, Girl Scouts, and neighbors who also live with disabilities, they have stated my running as an openly autistic female has given them hope. In a world full of “isms” like racism, ableism, classism, and sexism… running for office hopefully allows “activism” to help break down the stigmas that divide us. I have been blessed to have strong female role models. I’m now beyond humbled and honored to have the opportunity to encourage other women to run for elected office too. With the allegiance to people before politics and speaking truth to power helps erode biases in government. Together we can help uplift women and girls voices to pave the way for a more just, equitable, and inclusive future for everyone.
