A budget is a reflection of your priorities. Make your budget aim at your desired goals and reflect your dreams.
Zig Ziglar said, “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time.” This is one of my favorite quotes for many reasons, but especially when it comes to budgeting. So how can a budget help you aim for your goal, you ask? Well, here’s the simple answer. A budget is what allows you to “take aim” towards your goals. If you have no budget and no plan, your goals are merely wishes.
So, what to do? Take these three simple steps to be a budget boss. First, know your numbers. Look through the last three months of bank statements. What was your average income? What were your average expenditures? How much did you pay towards debt? Now these totals may surprise you. I know when I first started getting a handle on my budget, I had no idea how much I was spending. The first step to successful budgeting is to know your numbers.
The second step to successful budgeting is to align your budget with your goals. The key to mastering this step is to have a crystal clear vision of where you want to be. This way, you can “aim” at the right things! Essentially, you can “aim” your budget in the right direction to get you where you want to go! For example, if you’re saving to pay cash for a vacation, you know you must make room in your budget for this line item. Remember, you are in control of your budget.
The third step to successful budgeting is to review it frequently throughout the month. A perfectly balanced budget that is gathering dust on your desk is not helpful. Remember, the most effective budget is the one that both aims and aligns with your goals. In order to stay on track throughout the month, it is important to refer to your budget frequently. Referring back to your budget regularly throughout the month will help you recognize what is in your budget and more importantly, what is NOT in your budget!
