Summer is right around the corner, and most families are thinking about how to enjoy time together. Some families take vacations or visit amusement parks—which can break the bank—but many are looking to save money while still getting out and having a good time. If your family falls into the “fun on a budget” category, don’t fret! Our community offers many opportunities for low-cost family fun that you may or may not have considered.
When my kids were little, I had to find things to do that were not only budget-friendly but also piqued their interest while allowing them to burn off energy. Many of the places we visited were free. One spot my kids absolutely loved was the pet store. The local pet store was free to browse and felt like a mini zoo. For little ones, tiny creatures are incredibly exciting!
Another activity my kids loved was having a picnic in the park followed by time on the playground with other children. We’d pack a lunch and head over to parks like Soldier’s Field, Cascade, or Silver Lake, where there was always a variety of things to do. While your kids play, you might even meet a new mommy friend!
Minnesota has so much natural beauty to explore. My kids and I would often visit Quarry Hill and take in everything it had to offer. From books and birdwatching to inspecting cool insects, there was always something new to enjoy. Even if you’ve been to Quarry Hill more times than you can count, a nature hike through their trails never gets old—there’s always a new discovery waiting. If you’ve completely exhausted your visits there and don’t mind a short drive, many state parks are within reach.
Creating fun and memorable experiences with your family doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. From local pet stores and parks to nature hikes and library story times, our community is full of hidden gems that offer entertainment, connection, and adventure—all without stretching your budget. A few other places to check out that your children may enjoy include, but are not limited to, McDonald’s Playland, the mall’s play area, Oxbow Zoo, and story time at the library. With just a little creativity and curiosity, you can make this summer one your family will cherish for years to come.
