By NUWAY Alliance, management organization for The Gables
For 40 years, women from Rochester and surrounding communities have found refuge, support and treatment at the Gray Gables Mansion in southwest Rochester. The four-story, 1912 Tudor-style mansion was purchased in 1982 by June Davis, who recognized the need to create a healing sanctuary where women experiencing substance use disorder could receive high-quality residential treatment and fellowship. A pioneer, June met a dire need for gender-responsive care that remains in short supply nationwide today.
Behavioral health conditions affect people identifying as women differently than men, and women often need gender-responsive treatment. Adult and childhood traumas, including PTSD, are leading factors for developing substance use disorders. Addressing women’s issues and providing individualized treatment and education are some factors that make gender-specific treatment effective. Another is an all-female environment where clients feel safe and are more likely to engage in treatment.
NUWAY Alliance, one of Minnesota’s largest nonprofit behavioral health care providers, purchased The Gables in 2020 as its retiring founder sought a buyer committed to continuing its mission. With more than 57 years of experience, locations throughout Minnesota and highly skilled managers and clinicians, NUWAY Alliance was an ideal fit. In addition to seamlessly transitioning ownership, which allowed client care to continue undisrupted, NUWAY Alliance invested in physical plant improvements and modernized The Gables’ programming and treatment practices. The program provides individualized care, on-site nursing, individual and group psychotherapy, Twelve Step Facilitation and other evidence-based treatments. Like all NUWAY Alliance programs, The Gables is LGBTQ+ and MAT (medication-assisted treatment/recovery) friendly and helps clients access the full continuum of care. All are welcome on June 28 from 2-4 p.m. to celebrate The Gables 40th anniversary. Contact Crystal with questions at crystal.caruso@nuway.org.
